The Church
of the Mediator continues the historic Anglican witness which began in
this first American city named after George Washington. Founded in 1868,
the church's first building was destroyed by fire. The new building,
consecrated in 1896, is a remarkable example of the Victorian Gothic style
and has stained glass windows by the renowned Wilbur Burnham. A vigorous
congregation with powerful lay leadership carries on the work of Christ
today, guided by clear devotion to the Baptismal Covenant: to continue in
the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the
prayers; to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ;
to seek and serve Christ in all persons; and to strive for the dignity of
every human being. All sorts and conditions of persons make up our warm
fellowship, which is a strong intergenerational and interracial voice in
the heart of old colonial Georgia.
